Stock Contribution Receipts and Gift Valuation

Why does my stock contribution receipt and tax statement not show a value?

Stock Contribution Receipt Explanation

Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities are identified in the Contributions section of a donor advised fund. You can find gifts of stocks to a DAF in the Contribution History section with the Type label "Security."

After a gift of stock is liquidated into a corresponding donor advised fund from the broker and matched using the submission of The Signatry's Stock Contribution Notification Form, a Contributions Receipt is issued to the donor. These receipts can be found in the Documents section of a DAF and look similar to below.

The contribution receipt may show the units of stock and the date received. Contribution receipts will not show a listed dollar value.

Why Does The Signatry Not Include Values on Stock Receipts?

Under IRS regulations, it is the donor’s responsibility to determine the fair market value of a non-cash gift for tax deduction purposes. Our organization cannot provide you with this valuation. Please consult your tax advisor or find guidance in IRS Publication 561 for valuation.

You may encounter values related to a stock gift (“Receipted Amount” and “Proceeds”) in our platform or on a fund statement.

The receipted amount is our estimation of the value of the stock on the day we receive it, which may be a day or more later than when your broker initiated the transfer.

The proceeds amount is the net sale value after the stock has been liquidated, which may be a day or more later than the day we received the stock. This is the amount that will be available for granting in the fund balance.

Both of these values are for internal use and cannot serve as a fair market value determination for tax deduction purposes. Please consult your tax advisor for valuation.
